What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are designed to replace missing teeth with artificial teeth, usually made of porcelain. These replacement teeth preserve your smile and allow you to continue eating, drinking, and speaking comfortably. The implants themselves are small posts made of titanium (the same time-tested material used for joint replacements) that are surgically anchored in the jawbone.
Time is needed for the bone to heal and bond with the dental implant. Once healed, the implant provides a solid foundation to hold the new, artificial tooth in place. A support post, or abutment, connects the dental implant to the replacement tooth, called a crown. In most cases, temporary replacement teeth can be attached to the implant while the jawbone heals.
There are options for replacing a single missing tooth, several missing teeth, and even all of your teeth if needed. The surgeons at Milwaukee Oral Surgery and Implants offer a range of options for the best dental implants to restore your teeth and improve your oral health.

Which Types of Dental Implants Does Milwaukee Oral Surgery & Dental Implants Provide?
There are several dental implant procedures available at Milwaukee Oral Surgery and Implants. Choosing the best dental implants for your missing teeth hinges on several variables. You and your surgeon will consider the condition of your jawbone, how long the teeth have been missing, how many teeth need to be replaced, and other factors. Our surgeons can help you determine which procedure is right for you.
Single Tooth Implants
If you have just one or a few teeth missing, implants are the simplest solution. Each replacement tooth is attached to an individual dental implant.
Multiple Tooth Implants
If you have several teeth in a row missing, a multiple implant procedure minimizes the need for several implants in a row. Instead, an implant will be placed where the first and last missing teeth were, then a bridge of artificial teeth is permanently attached. If you have significant gaps, this is an excellent solution that minimizes surgery on the jawbone.
Two-Stage Implants
Two-stage dental implants are the most common and often the best implants if you are missing several teeth. The first stage in the surgery is to implant the titanium screws in the jawbone. After a few months, a follow-up surgery reveals the top of the implants so the abutments and crowns can be attached.
Single-Stage Implants
In some instances, the implants are placed with the caps still visible above the gums, alleviating the need to have a second surgery to expose the top of the implants. These may be the best dental implants for you if you don’t want to have a second surgery.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
If you have one or more missing teeth, dental implants are an excellent way to restore your teeth and ensure you can continue to enjoy eating, drinking, and speaking without discomfort or embarrassment. Implants can dramatically improve your quality of life and eliminate worries about shifting or uncomfortable dentures or bridges.
However, if you have certain health conditions, you should discuss them with one of our surgeons. They will need to ensure your jawbone is healthy and strong enough to support the implants. Cancer, radiation, diabetes, periodontal disease, and other conditions may prevent the bone from adequately fusing with the dental implants.
Dental Implants FAQ
How Much do Dental Implants Cost?
The cost of dental implants can vary quite a bit depending on how many missing teeth need replacing, the type of surgery performed, and the cost of custom crowns. Fortunately, affordable dental implants are available that put them within reach for most individuals. Some insurances may cover all or part of the cost. At Milwaukee Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, we also offer financing through CareCredit so that everyone can have the smile they deserve.
When Will I Have My New Teeth?
Most people will have their permanent porcelain crowns placed about three to six months after the initial dental implant surgery. This gives the jawbone and implants time to merge and provides a robust and stable foundation for your new teeth. Temporary caps can usually be put in place during the healing process to give you the appearance of a full set of teeth. In some situations, permanent crowns can be placed immediately after surgery.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Dental implants are considered a permanent solution to missing teeth. They can easily last for 30 years or more with proper care. If there is excessive wear on any crowns, they can be replaced.
Will I Need a Bone Graft for Dental Implants?
A bone graft won’t be necessary if you lost your teeth recently and don’t have any problems with jawbone deterioration. For some people, a bone graft is needed if the jawbone has deteriorated or, particularly in the case of front teeth, if the bone isn’t thick enough to hold the implant. Your surgeon can determine what is right for you.
Which is Better, Dental Implants or Dentures?
Several factors should be considered when choosing between dentures and dental implants, including cost, the condition of your jawbone and any remaining teeth, comfort, and convenience.
Dental implants are especially popular because the implants will often last a lifetime, particularly in patients over 55 years of age, and do away with the need to care for dentures. However, if the teeth have been missing for a long time or the individual has lost bone density, a bone graft may be necessary. If you are a good candidate for dental implants, they have several advantages over dentures, including:
- Dental implants have a success rate of 95% vs. dentures that may fit poorly or don’t stay in place.
- The best dental implants can last 20-30 years.
- Your facial structure is preserved.
- Your jawbone and the implants provide a strong foundation and stop the deterioration of the bone.
- You will be able to eat and drink any food without worrying about anything getting lodged beneath your dentures.
Dental implants cost more than dentures, but they last longer, are stronger, easier to care for, and don’t shift about in your mouth. I visited the office in Whitefish Bay this week and all the staff were so helpful, but really impressed me is their diligence in following up, particularly Dr Judd Smith and Meghan (spelling). Meghan and Dr Smith went out of their way to cut through the insurance red tape, and I was so grateful. Thanks to both of them!! They helped me so much!

I had my wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Hawkins and he as well as his staff were amazing! Safe to say I don’t remember a thing after I got the IV and was told I’d be out in 15 seconds lol! I woke up with gauze in my mouth and unhooked from all of the machines and was led into the recovery room. I would definitely return and refer anyone for future dental work. Thank you all!

We looked for over a year to find a doctor that could help us for an extremely difficult situation with my young son, Nate. Finally we found Dr. Hawkins. He made sure my son got the care he needed promptly and went over and above what anyone else would do. Dr. Hawkins and his staff were an answer to many prayers for us after a long period of many tears and worries. Since then I have recommended this office to my nephew who gave their team all positive reviews. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Dr. Hawkins and team!

I had my consultation at the Port Washington office and the staff was very nice. Dr. Miller was wonderful. I was already nervous going into it and he explained every little detail until I understood what was being done and answered all of my questions. I was struggling with my insurance and what was going to be covered. Dr. Miller's office offered to contact my insurance and work with them on what coverage would be. On the day of the surgery I was at the Mequon office. Dr. Miller's staff there are very nice as well. I was nervous of course on that day and the receptionist was so helpful and nice! Dr. Miller's nurses were absolutely wonderful! I had to wait about half hour while Dr. Miller finished with another patient. I was never alone in the room and each nurse would strike up a conversation. I was nervous about being put under and they explained exactly what happens and what will happen. After the surgery one of Dr. Miller's nurses walked me all the way out to my car. She made sure I got in and was buckled in too! I thought that this was very nice! They could have easily sent me out the door after the surgery with my driver, but instead they took that extra step and that extra care. I greatly appreciated the extra touch from Dr. Miller himself the next day when he personally called to make sure everything was going okay. He really shows that not only does Dr. Miller cares about his patients, but his team does as well. If I had to do it again (which I hope I never do) I would go right back to Dr. Miller.

Dr. Hawkins was so wonderful, the work that he does is first rate and he never will settle for "good enough". It was a three year journey for me from the start of the removal of two of my front teeth, bone graphs and gum tissue graphs, implant studs in and patience to ensure the best outcome. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and personable that I always felt comfortable and in good hands. My final appointment at my dentist was on 12/30/16 and the final product was three implants and a smile so big that will be everlasting!

Dr. Gingrass did a truly exceptional job extracting my wisdom teeth. I had minimal pain, minimal swelling, and in five days I was back to normal. As a patient with other medical complications, Dr. Gingrass and the staff took extra precautions to ensure my safety when it came to medications I could take. I really appreciated this, and felt completely comfortable with him. I have recommended Dr. Gingrass to both family and friends.
