Before Intravenous Sedation Anesthesia

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for six (6) hours prior to the appointment (IV sedation).
  • No smoking for at least 24 hours prior to surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses should be left at home. If you have glasses, you are welcome to bring them.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, or cough, please notify the office as soon as possible.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with the oral surgeon prior to your surgical date for instructions.
  • Pre-medication (Ibuprofen 400-600 mg) may be suggested prior to the surgery to reduce swelling and pain. If your doctor has recommended that you do this, please take the medication 1.5 hours prior to the surgery with small sips of water.

These instructions apply only if you have chosen to be sedated for your procedure. There are no eating or drinking restrictions with local anesthetic. You may also drive yourself to and from the office if you choose to go with local anesthetic.
